Authorities say a 23-year-old hunter who was found dead earlier this week in rural southeast Missouri apparently fell through some ice and died of hypothermia.

The Scott County Sheriff's Department led a search in a wooded area near where 23-year-old Zack Johnston's truck was found. He had been gone since Tuesday, when he left to go duck hunting. His body was found Wednesday.

Scott County Coroner Scott Amick told The Southeast Missourian the search team found a hole in the ice where Johnston fell. Amick says the water in the lake area was three feet deep but immediately saturated Johnston's clothing.

He says hypothermia set in quickly and could have killed Johnston in about 15 minutes.

Amick said there will not be an autopsy.
