Rarely do I ever say trust that I am an expert on something. But, in the case of holes that have started appearing in Missouri yards, I am. My expertise is why you never ever want to put your hand down those holes and I can prove why with science, pictures and video.

It's that time of year when you'll start seeing this strange hole in your yard in many parts of Missouri. Look familiar?

You might mistake it for a mole hill, but it's not that. Oh, no, no, no...what lurks down in that hole is something you will not want to deal with. Trust my expertise, because if you do reach down there, this is what is likely to pop up.

That, my friend, is a Missouri wolf spider and they are not the kind of creature you want biting your hand. If you reach down in this burrow, they will bite you. You're invading their home and likely their nest. They lay eggs in late Spring and will eat anything up to their own size including frogs. This cricket got too close and paid the price.

The good news is that Missouri wolf spiders are harmless unless you provoke them. Spoiler Alert - putting your hand down in their burrow is provoking them.

So, next time you see this burrow in your yard, walk on by and keep your hands in your pockets. It's the best way to not incur nightmare fuel into your sleep time forever.
