Baseball’s Silly Season is Here

It happens every July—at least since the internet took hold on the world.

Speculation is everywhere about possible trades during the time known as the July Fire Sale.

A few years back, I attended a media day with the Kansas City Royals sponsored by the Missouri Broadcasters Association. This event fell a couple days after the July 31st trading deadline. The Royals were nowhere near contention and a couple of their players starred in some of the July Fire Sale speculation. The players in question were still with Kansas City after the deadline.

When one of those present asked Royals GM Dayton Moore about the rumors, Moore’s response was spot-on.

“I have another name for trade rumors.    …Lies”.

That’s a quote to keep in mind through the rest of July when you hear or read of a pending deal. Most of what’s out there is fertilizer.
