Hearings are under way on an electricity rate hike proposed by Ameren Missouri.

The Public Service Commission is sponsoring 12 hearings around the state. The closest to Northeast Missouri are today in Kirksville, tomorrow (January 13) in Mexico and January 20 in St. Charles. All three are at 6 p.m. Today’s meeting is at the Truman State University Activities Room in Kirksville. On January 13, people can voice their opinion at the Audrain County 4-H Center in Mexico. The January 20 session is at the County Administration Building in St. Charles.

Ameren proposes raising annual electricity revenues by $ 264 million. The utility says the extra income would be spent on improving the electric grid and investing in cleaner air and renewable energy efforts.

Consumer groups estimate the increase would raise the average household’s bill by 10 dollars a month.

Regulators will hold formal hearings on the proposal from February 23 to March 13 in Jefferson City.
