A Chicago man is in the Marion County Jail after police discovered 32 pounds of marijuana in his car during a traffic stop early Friday morning.

According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, shortly after 4:30 am, Daozheng Kang was stopped on Highway 36 near the intersection of Stoddard St. in Monroe City. After speaking with the officer and granting him permission to search the vehicle, ten pounds of marijuana was discovered in the trunk. An additional 22 pounds was discovered shortly thereafter in laundry baskets in the back seats.

Kang was charged with the Class C felony of Delivery of a Controlled Substance—a charge that carries a range of punishment up to ten years in the Dept. of Corrections or up to one year in jail or a fine up to $10,000.

His bond was set at $50,000 cash or surety. His first court date will likely be August 11.
