Temporary Restraining Order Issued for Quarantined Kids

An Adams County judge has issued a temporary restraining order to allow three Quincy Public School students to return to class after being quarantined due to COVID-19.

Judge Debra Wellborn issued the order Thursday evening after hearing arguments from attorneys for the school district and the parents of three students who had been home to quarantine for ten days due to COVID.

The parents, Scott and Jamie Hamby, Christina Flesner and Travis and Ashley Oshner, filed suit Monday against QPS and Superintendent Roy Webb, seeking to allow their children, who were quarantined due to contact tracing, to return to in-person learning.

The parents’ attorney argued and the judge agreed that the school district did not have the authority to send students home for more than the 48-hour quarantine order issued by the Adams County Health Department.

The court ruling only applies to the three children listed in the suit, but according to Webb, "The school district is not going to be able to stop any students outside of the 48-hour quarantine order that's issued by the Adams County Health Department. We don't have the authority. We'll continue to ask parents to follow the full quarantine, but I don't have the authority to stop them at the door. We cant' stop students at this point with the court ruling."

School officials said the students would be allowed to attend class Friday.
