What’s left of the bridge that used to carry Highway 104 over the Illinois River will come down Wednesday.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, the remaining truss spans of the old Illinois River bridge at Meredosia will be imploded Wednesday, weather permitting.

To ensure public safety, IDOT will close 104 at Illinois 99 and at Casey’s General Store in Meredosia at 7:15 Wednesday morning.

The implosion is scheduled for 7:30, and 104 will reopen after debris has been removed. The Illinois River channel will be impassable for 24 hours while crews remove the structure from the water.

The new $86 million dollar bridge at Meredosia opened in June.
