There will be a runoff election in Hannibal’s Fifth Ward city council race.

In the three-way race Tuesday, Colin Welch finished first with 48 percent of the vote. But, to win, a candidate has to get at least 50 percent.

According to the city charter, there needs to be a runoff election April 18th between the top two finishers, in this case Welch and incumbent Gordon Ipson. Richard Garrett finished third.

The runoff election won’t be official until the city council approves it at a special call meeting April 10th.

The last time there was a runoff election for a Hannibal city council seat was 2010.
