Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner would like to see the Illinois Veterans’ Home transformed into a premier veterans service facility.

After spending the weekend at the home, Rauner told the media Monday that the ball is rolling for the eventual construction of a new facility to replace the 132 year old vets home.

The first step is the renovation of the Sycamore Healthcare Center, so that it can house veterans while a new home is being built.

Rauner expects a design for a new facility to be ready by next summer and bids to be let by next fall.

A key part of the new construction is a completely new water system to prevent future outbreaks of Legionnaires’ Disease at the home.
