Local baseball fans are getting ready for opening day. Unfortunately, both the Quincy Gems and the Hannibal Cavemen will open their seasons on the road on May 28, but both teams will have home games the following night. Quincy will host Springfield, and Hannibal will be visited by Danville. The Gems and Cavemen will not face one another until June 3.

It has been fun to watch the Gems/Cavemen rivalry develop over the last few years. In 2012, Quincy opened the season at QU Stadium with a game against Hannibal. The crowd was HUGE! With such a short distance between the cities, fans of each team have been travelling back and forth to attend games. The Cavemen won that game, but the Gems came back and won a close match the following night.

I noticed on the schedule this year that there are a few day/night doubleheaders scheduled, with one game in Quincy and one game in Hannibal. That should be fun. The first date is June 8. The first game will be at 1:05 at QU Stadium, and the second at Clemens Field will start at 7:05. There will also be doubleheaders split between the cities on July 28 and August 3.

In total, the Quincy Gems and Hannibal Cavemen will meet 15 times during the 2013 regular season. Attending one of these games is a great idea for an affordable night out with the family. Check each teams' official websites for ticket prices and information, but tickets are less than $10.
