(Jefferson City, MO)—Missouri State Treasurer Clint Zweifel has returned $19.5 million dollars in Unclaimed Property to rightful owners in the last six months, but nearly $700 million dollars in unclaimed assets remain.

Sixty-one accounts have over $100,000 each waiting to be claimed. Missouri law requires banks, insurance companies, and other business entities to turn assets over to the state if there has been no contact with the owner for five or more years.

Since January 2009, the State Treasurer has returned $140 million dollars to more than 450,000 account holders. Most unclaimed property consists of bank accounts, stocks, bonds, safe deposit box contents, insurance policies and utility deposits. It does not include real property.

You can search for unclaimed assets on line at www.ShowMeMoney.com.  The Treasurer says there is never a charge to return unclaimed assets.
