My dad used to call this kind of thing "found money". There are 140,000 in the state of Illinois that are about to get an unexpected check in the mail.

I saw this happy news (for some) shared by AOL today. As you might be aware, the state of Illinois has billions of dollars in unclaimed property. This report says that many in Illinois without filing a claim are about to get compensation. This is called the Enhanced Money Match program from the Illinois Treasurer’s office and it apparently matches up information in their database with unclaimed things.

The grand total for all of the checks to be sent out is $13.2 million. Cha-ching.

Don't get too excited about becoming suddenly rich. The check amounts will reportedly be between $50 and $100 dollars, but still that's money that many didn't know they had coming.

There's a chance that Illinois owes you way more than this. That's why it's highly recommended that you search their online database now so you can file a claim if you find your name connected with valuables that Illinois has.

Now you know if you get a check in the mail over the next few days from Illinois, it's legit. "Found money" is the best kind of surprise, don't you think?
