A Quincy man charged with first-degree murder in the death of man whose throat he is accused of slashing has been ordered to undergo a mental fitness evaluation.

Alex T. Koehler is accused in the death of 56-year-old Robert J. Owens of Quincy, who died Saturday. Authorities say Owens was stabbed July 9.

The Quincy Herald-Whig reports Adams County Circuit Judge Scott Walden ordered the evaluation, which will take place July 28. Koehler's next scheduled court date is Aug. 6.

The 27-year-old Koehler was arrested after police on a wellness check found Owens with his throat slashed. Police say they recovered the knife allegedly used in the attack. Prosecutors say the two men knew each other.

Koehler is jailed in Adams County in lieu of $1 million bond.
