Marion County Sheriff’s Office Warns of Computer Scam
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office has received reports on the latest computer scam.
In a press release from Deputy Tyler Wheeler, he reports that two individuals from the Palmyra area notified deputies that they had received calls from someone with an Asian accent stating they were from Microsoft, using the names Dave Smith and Jake Miles.
The caller was able to scare the complainants into providing their IP addresses and bank account information over the phone.
An investigation revealed the victims’ computers were used as mules to send funds to Nicaragua and China.
Deputies told the victims to report the possible fraud to their bank and to disconnect their computer.
Citizens are reminded to never give personal information out over the phone. If anyone receives a call from an agent demanding money or personal information, they should hang up and contact their local law enforcement agency.
