A suburban Chicago man who pleaded guilty to a criminal sexual assault charge in a 2012 attack on a 7-year-old girl has been sentenced to 16 years in prison.

Nyasha Mbawa of Gurnee also admitted to abusing a 9-year-old girl in a statement to police. But under a negotiated deal, the 21-year-old pleaded guilty to the one count of predatory criminal sexual abuse involving the 7-year-old.

Assistant Lake County State's Attorney John Brown had asked for a term of 26 years. Defense attorney Jed Stone sought the minimum 12 years.

Mbawa must serve a mandatory term of supervised release ranging from four years to life after he is released. He also must register as a sexual predator.
