The Knox County Commission appointed a temporary sheriff to replace Robert Becker Thursday morning.

In accordance with state statute, the commission appointed Coroner Alan Rimer to serve as sheriff until a special election can be held.

Becker resigned as sheriff Wednesday after pleading guilty to charges of domestic assault and sexual abuse.

There will be a special election February 26th to elect a new sheriff to serve the remainder of Becker’s term, which runs through 2020.

Rimer says that he will oversee the office, with chief deputies handling most of the responsibilities until a new sheriff is elected.
