Chicago’s Snowplows Have New Names and They’re Absolutely Hilarious

Just when you thought you were snowed-in and can't get to work, here comes Casimir Plowaski to the rescue.

The Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation recently wrapped up its "You Name A Snowplow" contest by announcing the top 6 entries.

This is the second year the department has reached out to the public for help naming Chicago's snowplows.

In phase one of the contest, residents suggested names. Phase two was a vote for the best names with the top six vote-getters winning the contest.

The winning names will be featured on signage attached to one snowplow in each of Chicago's six snow districts.

According to ABC 7, residents who submitted the winning entries will have a chance to get their photo taken with the plow bearing their suggested name.

Winning Slowplow Names For 2024

The city announced the winning names earlier today following the voting period. The winning entries are:

• Skilling It: Named after long-time WGN meteorologist Tom Skilling
• CTRL-SALT-DELETE: A tribute to the keystroke used to reset computers
• Casimir Plowaski: Seems appropriate considering the state's annual observance of Casimir Pulaski Day.
• Ernie Snowbanks: Named after Chicago Cubs legend and baseball Hall-of-Famer Ernie Banks.
• Mies van der Snow: Honoring famed architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, whose work can be found throughout the Chicago area
• Bad, Bad Leroy Plow: Baddest man in the whole damn town. This one is named after the titular character in Jim Croce's 1973 song "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown."

The department shared with ABC 7 that it received "thousands" of votes for the 50 finalists for 2024. Last year, more than 80,000 votes were cast according to the "You Name a Snowplow" website.

The 2024 winners join last year's fleet of:

• Da Plow
• Salter Payton
• Sears Plower
• Sleet Home Chicago
• Holy Plow!
• Jean Baptiste Point du Shovel
