If you've picked up oysters near St. Louis recently, you might want to check and make sure they're not part of a batch that recently led to the death of a Missouri man who passed away after eating some raw.

I saw Yahoo News pass along the sad news of the passing of a 54-year-old Missouri man who passed away on June 8 after he was infected by a bacteria from oysters he purchased from a seafood stand. As of this writing, he has not been identified.

The St. Louis Health Department issued a bulletin warning that anyone who purchased oysters from The Fruit Stand & Seafood, 14433 Manchester Road in Manchester, Missouri should dispose of them immediately.

The authorities added that the employees of the seafood stand in Manchester are not believed to have done anything to contaminate the oysters, but they likely arrived there that way.

The Missouri man died from infection by the bacteria Vibrio vulnificus. The CDC warns that these are the symptoms that you might be infected:

  • Watery diarrhea
  • Stomach cramping
  • Nausea
  • Fever
  • Low blood pressure
  • Skin lesions

They note that this bacteria can also infect from open wounds.

So far the death of the Missouri man is the only known case tied to the seafood stand in Manchester, Missouri. Be sure to check the official bulletin from the St. Louis Health Department for more details and updates.
