The Missouri Department of Conservation just shared a bulletin about hemorrhagic disease in Missouri deer. They say this involves two variations of related viruses which include epizootic hemorrhagic disease and bluetongue. They are clear that they do NOT expect a large outbreak this year among the Missouri deer population, but they also need an accurate way to measure the extent of the spread of it, just the same.

“Hemorrhagic disease is a naturally occurring virus in Missouri’s deer population,” explained MDC Wildlife Health Program Supervisor Deb Hudman. “Outbreaks are most common between July and October and typically end after a heavy frost kills the midges that spread it.”
