This has been a conversation for weeks in my house. When is the appropriate age to stop trick-or-treating? In Missouri, one city is taking a stand on how old is too old for trick-or-treating.

There are a few cities in Virginia, Illinois, and even Missouri that have put an age restriction when it comes to trick-or-treating. St. Louis and the City of Ste. Genevieve has ordinances in place that have age limits on trick-or-treating. In St. Geneviene,

Accompanied By An Adult. All person under the age of fourteen (14) who are engaged in trick or treating shall be accompanied by a parent or other responsible adult of at least twenty-one (21) years of age.

According to KUSI, there is a threat that people could be fined or jailed in St. Louis for trick-or-treating after age 12, which I think is a bit much. Officials say they are doing this to keep the mischief down. Listen, kids will always find a way to get into trouble.

So, is there an age to stop trick-or-treating?

I think it depends on the kid. My 10-year-old is about done, but my soon-to-be 13-year-old loves Halloween. So it depends. Now, I will always go out with my kiddos so they can't get into trouble I think that is so important. If you have older kids as a parent/guardian you go with your kids. Even if you stay in the car you are close by watching and making sure they are not getting into trouble.

LOOK: How Halloween has changed in the past 100 years

Stacker compiled a list of ways that Halloween has changed over the last 100 years, from how we celebrate it on the day to the costumes we wear trick-or-treating. We’ve included events, inventions, and trends that changed the ways that Halloween was celebrated over time. Many of these traditions were phased out over time. But just like fake blood in a carpet, every bit of Halloween’s history left an impression we can see traces of today.
