The state of Illinois has known that it has a problem with this interstate so police decided to do something about it. A sting operation was just completed on I-57, one of America's most dangerous roadways.

I saw the jaw-dropping numbers just shared by the Public Information Office of the Illinois State Police of a just-completed exercise on Interstate 57. Over a 4-day period from October 3 through October 7, they put their troopers on a detail with the focus of this oftentimes treacherous 257 mile Illinois interstate. Check out the results.

  • Speeding Citations Issued - 599
  • Speeding Warnings Issued - 484
  • Motor Carrier Safety Inspections - 198
  • Move Over “Scott’s Law” Citations Issued - 16
  • Criminal Arrests - 6
  • Suspended/Revoked/No Driver’s License Citations - 46

One other cause and effect of this Illinois State Police focus on I-57 is there were no fatal accidents during that 4-day period and only 5 overall.

The press release from the Illinois State Police said that over a quarter of the fatal crashes on I-57 involve large trucks so that's part of where their focus was during the early October operation.

A few months ago, IDOT completed $82 million dollars in improvements to the Chicago area part of I-57. There's also the ongoing I-57 and I-74 interchange reconstruction project. Somehow, some way lets hope that improvements and perhaps better driver behavior can lessen the number of lives lost on this Illinois interstate.
