The resignation of Illinois Congressman Aaron Schock following revelations of lavish spending and improper expense reporting is generating reaction from politicians across the political spectrum.

In a brusque statement, Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner would only say Schock's resignation Tuesday is "a sad day for the people of Illinois and the 18th District."

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin said in a statement that the allegations against the Peoria Republican are serious, and that they raise questions about his expenditure of official funds and campaign funds. Durbin went on to say Schock's resignation "came as a surprise and reflects the gravity of his situation."

Saying honesty and integrity are important when serving the public, Illinois GOP Chairman Tim Schneider added Schock's resignation is unfortunate for the 18th District, the state and the Republican Party.
