Illinois Had an Earthquake Wednesday Night in an Unexpected Place

If you thought you just felt an earthquake in Illinois, you're correct. It was nothing world-changing, but it did happen in an unexpected place.

UPDATE: 9/26/24 - 9:15pm - The USGS has now upgraded this Illinois quake to a 2.4 magnitude and many have now reported feeling it.

ORIGINAL STORY: I was just checking in on the USGS earthquake shake page and noticed a dot where I almost never see a dot. It was a quake confirmed by a seismologist located just to the northeast of Keyesport, Illinois that just happened at 9:50pm Wednesday night.

What's odd about this location is it's more or less in between the New Madrid Seismic Zone and the Wabash Valley Seismic Zone. No, a 2.1 magnitude quake is no big deal, but it's just not a part of Illinois that sees many quakes.

It will be interesting to see how many people report feeling this quake. Once the USGS collects reports, I'll update this with a felt report. Considering there are rarely any earthquakes in this part of Illinois, I'd bet this got at least a few people's attention.
