Community Service Officers with the Hannibal Police Department were called to a home in the 1600 block of D Street Wednesday.

Officers found and seized a total of 31 cats that were inside and around the residence.

HPD says the majority of the cats were not in good health and are likely unadoptable.

Officials describe this as an unfortunate circumstance for the animals and a reminder why there is a city ordinance allowing residents just three cats per household.

If you are a cat owner, you are encouraged to spay or neuter your animals, and if you need to surrender your animals, you can contact a Community Service Officer or the Northeast Missouri Humane Society on Warren Barrett Drive.
