Hannibal Parks & Rec Seeks Donations to Restore Central Park War

The Hannibal Parks & Recreation Department has kicked off a campaign to restore the metal plaques on the war memorial in Central Park.

On May 14, 1962, the War Memorial to soldiers of World War I and World War II was dedicated. It contains eight bronze plaques with names of Hannibal services men of both wars. It was erected in Central Park through the efforts of the Service Mothers of War World II and the Emette J. Shields Post 55, American Legion.

There are more than 5,000 names on the plaques but the plaques are faded and hard to read. One company has estimated that it will cost about $12,000 to clean and restore the names. The Hannibal Park Board voted to authorize a fund-raising campaign.

The Hannibal Parks & Recreation Department is seeking donations of $100 or more. Then names of the donors will be engraved on a plaque on the back of the war memorial.

The standards of giving are:
• Freedom Level, $1,000 and more
• Valor Level, $500-999
• Honor Level, $100-499

All contributions are tax-deductible.
