A Quincy man who allegedly abducted his 18 month old son made his first appearance in Adams County Circuit Court Monday.

41 year old Nathaniel Fortney is charged with child abduction and domestic battery.

Quincy Police were called to a residence on South 36th April 27th to keep the peace while the child’s mother picked him up at Fortney’s home.

During the course of the incident, two juveniles ran out the back door of the home with the child, and they and Fortney fled the area.

Fortney was arrested two days later in Commerce, Oklahoma.

Authorities said the child appeared to have been well taken care of. Fortney reportedly told law enforcement he was trying to protect his son.

Fortney is in the Adams County Jail on $50,000 bond. He has a preliminary hearing set for May 24th.
