Work has begun on Hannibal’s much anticipated Veterans’ Memorial.

At a press conference Thursday, officials with the Hannibal Parks and Recreation Department announced that the first 150 memorial bricks have been placed just west of the eventual site of the memorial at the Cardiff Hill Overlook.

About two-thirds of the money has been raised to fund the memorial, which will feature a bell from the U.S.S. Hannibal, a Navy ship that sailed in the Spanish-American War and both world wars.

The Veterans Service Commission is working with Parks and Rec on the memorial.

If you would like to donate to the memorial, or have a veterans remembered on a brick on the pathway to the memorial, contact the Hannibal Parks and Recreation Department.
