A former central Illinois mayor has been sentenced to probation after pleading guilty to misconduct charges.

The (Springfield) State Journal-Register reports that ex-Kincaid Mayor Doug Thomas was sentenced Thursday in Christian County Court as part of a plea deal.

He pleaded guilty to official misconduct for asking village employees to use village equipment for a home project. Prosecutors say that means Thomas never can hold public office again.

Thomas also pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

Charges of violating a protective order and unlawful drug possession were dropped as part of the deal.

Thomas had served in Kincaid government for 28 years before resigning in August. His attorney says Thomas "would like to move on" with his life.

Kincaid is about 25 miles southeast of Springfield.
