UPDATE: A third person has died as a result of that Wednesday afternoon house fire in Hannibal.

Marion County Coroner Rick Jones now reports 42 year old Jason Carpenter died about 3 p.m. Thursday at University Hospital in Columbia.

Carpenter died of smoke inhalation from the fire at 1800 Grace Street about 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Carpenter’s step-children, five year old Logan and six year old Summer Shanks, died about 5 p.m. Wednesday at Hannibal Regional.

An investigation has determined the cause of the fire was unintentional.

A young brother and sister died in a Hannibal house fire Wednesday afternoon.

Marion County Coroner Rick Jones reported that five year old Logan and six year old Summer Shanks, were pronounced dead at Hannibal Regional Hospital about 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The Shanks’ step-father, identified as Jason Carpenter, was taken first to Hannibal Regional and later transferred to University Hospital in Columbia in critical condition.

Hannibal firefighters responded to the fire at 1800 Grace Street about 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Investigators determined the cause of the fire was unintentional.

Funeral arrangements for Logan and Summer Shanks are pending with the James O’Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal.
