Pandemic, supply chain shortages and online sales notwithstanding, there are a lot of shoppers who still have Black Friday, November 26 marked with a big red circle on their calendars.

Whether it's the camaraderie of camping outside your favorite store the night before or making it a point to be at the front of the line when the doors open, Black Friday shopping can be a time of fellowship and/or no holds barred competition.

Our friends at wallethub.com have compiled a list of the best places to shop on Black Friday, at least among the national chain stores.

What caught my eye is that of their top ten, four of the stores have outlets that are close by.

WalletHub's list is based on each store's average percentage of discounts for Black Friday sales.

Number two on their list, with an average discount of nearly 58% is JC Penney, a longtime resident of the Huck Finn Shopping Center in Hannibal.

In the number four slot is Kohl's, discounting specials an average of just over 49%. You'll find Kohl's locally on East Broadway in Quincy.

Wal-Mart stands at number eight, with discounts averaging nearly 32%. Wal-Mart's can be found in Hannibal and Quincy, along with locations close by in Bowling Green and Pittsfield.

Rounding out the top ten is Big Lots, with average Black Friday discounts just over 29%. You'll find them just around the corner from Penney's in the Huck Finn Shopping Center.

All that said, if Black Friday shopping is not your thing, there are any number of "mom and pop" businesses that would love to see you on Small Business Saturday on November 27.
