Cass County authorities have charged a Beardstown man with murder in the death of his girlfriend's 8-month-old son.

Jose Nieto-Roman was charged Wednesday with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery. He faces up to life in prison if convicted of murder and six to 30 years if convicted of battery.

Police say Nieto-Roman was caring for Edwardo Flores before the boy's mother found him with severe injuries on Oct. 31. They say Nieto-Roman wasn't home at the time.

Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Eric Hall says Flores suffered multiple blunt force injuries and third-degree burns over a large portion of his body. He was pronounced dead at a Rushville hospital.

Nieto-Roman is being held in the Morgan County jail. It wasn't immediately clear if he has an attorney.
