In a letter to Adams County Board Chairman Kent Snider, Sheriff Vonderhaar announced his intention to retire as sheriff September 25th.

Vonderhaar says due to personal health reasons, it is in the best interest of him, his family and the department for him to step down now.

Vonderhaar also recommended that current Chief Deputy Rich Wagner be appointed to fill the remainder of his term.

Vonderhaar was appointed sheriff in 2016 when Brent Fisher stepped down. Vonderhaar was elected to finish Fisher’s term later that year, and was elected to a full four year term in 2018.

Wagner has been with the sheriff’s department for over 20 years, the last four as chief deputy.

The Adams County Board will officially accept Vonderhaar’s resignation and appoint Wagner sheriff September 15th, with Wagner’s first day as sheriff September 25th.
