It's actually a very prestigious honor when you think about the fact that millions of USA Today readers voted for weeks to make this determination. They have chosen a new #1 grocery store chain which has 31 Missouri and 18 Illinois places.

After the finalists were chosen and weeks of voting, USA Today readers ranked their 10 favorite grocery store chains in America and #1 has many Missouri and Illinois locations. Congratulations to Hy-Vee, the new number one grocery store chain according to USA Today.

Scrape Hero says that Hy-Vee has 31 Missouri stores and 18 in Illinois. I checked the Hy-Vee store locator page and it's hard for me to count all the little dots, so I'll take Scrape Hero's word for the exact number in each state.

USA Today announced the winner saying "Employee-owned Hy-Vee's slogan is "a helpful smile in every aisle," and you'll find those grins in more than 280 stores across the Midwest." They also seemed to be fans of "locally grown fruits and vegetables" in Hy-Vee stores.

Another regional favorite, Aldi, came in as the 6th favorite grocery chain which is impressive considering this is a national reader's poll.
