Quincy University has received a record breaking gift to support student scholarships in memory of a QU alumnus who is best known for his iconic role on a long-running TV show.

QU officials say that an anonymous donor has established the John Mahoney Scholarship for students majoring in the humanities with an investment of over $900,000, making it by far the school’s largest endowed scholarship.

Mahoney graduated from what was then Quincy College in 1966 with a bachelor’s degree in English.

Mahoney became an actor in the 70s, and was best known for the role of Martin Crane in the sitcom Frazier from 1993 to 2004.

John Mahoney died in 2018 at age 77.
