A proposal to control the population of feral and stray cats roaming the streets of Pacific, Missouri, has been approved.

Local media outlets report the Pacific Board of Aldermen voted 4-2 in favor of the ordinance which allows the capture, sterilization and then return of feral and stray cats into the neighborhoods where they were found. The decision comes after residents seemed to be split over the proposal.

The ordinance will replace the current one, which allows the city to hold cats for five days and then kill them.

Officials estimate there are as many as 400 cats without owners roaming Pacific or making homes in colonies in fields and woods.
