The Missouri Department of Conservation releases its preliminary numbers for the 2017 spring turkey season.

For the season that ran from April 17th through May 7th, hunters harvested a total of 39,239 turkeys, with an additional 4,100 birds bagged during the youth hunting season on April 8th and 9th.

Both these totals are down from a year ago, with DOC officials blaming less-than-ideal weather conditions during most of the season for the reduced numbers.

Statewide, the top counties for turkey harvest were Franklin County with 932, Texas County with 843 and Callaway County with 697 turkeys harvested.

In northeast Missouri, there were 647 birds bagged in Macon County, 512 turkeys taken in Monroe County and 449 turkeys harvested in Adair County.
