This has been and always will be a tricky state question. What is the smallest town in Illinois? It depends on who you ask, but there is an official answer and in Illinois, it's a tie between two tiny places that both have just 36 souls calling it home.

This topic has come up again thanks to a new video share by Travel with a Wiseguy on YouTube. More than just sharing a list, he actually got in his car and drove to the 10 smallest towns in Illinois. I appreciate that he limited it to official "towns" and not just villages and communities. There are some single-digit population places in Illinois, but there's just a collection of homes with no post office, city government, etc. Nothing wrong with those places, but it's really not fair to compare them to real cities and towns.

He says that there are two smallest towns in Illinois and they both have a population of just 36 people.

He says that Hollowayville, Illinois had a population of 207 at its peak in 1900, but it's been shrinking ever since. Burnt Prairie, Illinois, on the other hand had a top population of 202 in 1940 and other than a slight uptick of people in the 1970's has been reducing in years since.
