A dive to a shipwreck in Lake Michigan has turned tragic as an Illinois man perished Tuesday 125 feet down.

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel is reporting that Patrick Kelly, of Winthrop Harbor, Illinois died Tuesday as he was diving down to the S.S. Wisconsin. WISN 12 News had footage from the efforts that recovered his body.

The Kenosha County Sheriff's Department shared more details of the distress call they received when Patrick Kelly did not surface when expected.

Wikipedia says that the S.S. Wisconsin was built in 1881 and sank in Lake Michigan off the coast of Kenosha, Wisconsin in 1929. It was October 29, 1929 when the ship encountered a storm while transporting passengers and tools with as many as 10 losing their lives after it took on water and sank.

Winthrop Harbor, Illinois is located next to Lake Michigan just south of the Wisconsin border.
