To celebrate the upcoming centennial celebration of the famous Route 66, the Illinois State Museum is looking for all types of items related to the famous road. From art to signs, and everything in between the next few years the museum will be collecting these items to put them on display just in time for the anniversary.
Eyewitness News WTVO WQRF reported that the new exhibit will not be ready until 2026, so that will give the museum plenty of time to gather several items for the anniversary. Some of the items the museum are looking for include:
- objects used for/in a business
- objects related to the Black Experience along Route 66
- objects related to construction
- objects related to WWII
- Maps showing Route 66 in Illinois Map
I've driven on this famous road and it's so cool to experience the old buildings and shops along the way. I am excited to see what the museum collects these next few years. There are a few abandoned places to explore as well.
The museum is also searching for items from Gen-Xers for a new exhibit they hope to have open sometime next year.
