The Humane Society of Missouri Animal Cruelty Task Force (ACT), at the request of the Moniteau County Sheriff’s Office, is rescuing 32 dogs from horrendous, filthy conditions on a property near Russellville, Mo.

The rescued dogs include five 4-week-old Beagle-mix puppies and three 8-week-old puppies of unknown breed. The other dogs appear to be mixed-breed Dachshunds, Border Collies, Chihuahuas, Pit Bulls and Pointers.

The dogs have been living in a waste-filled, trash-strewn double-wide trailer. Most of the dogs have severe hair loss and are exhibiting constant scratching due to an intense burning, itchy skin irritation; and have external and internal parasites and other veterinary problems such as eye, ear and respiratory infections. ACT Investigators believe the animals have had little to no veterinary care.

Following discussion with the Humane Society of Missouri and the Moniteau County Sheriff’s Office, the owner agreed to voluntarily surrender these dogs to the Humane Society of Missouri. The Humane Society of Missouri Animal Cruelty Task Force will recommend animal abuse charges be filed against the animals’ owner.

“It is heartbreaking to see animals suffering from obviously long-term neglect,” said Kathy Warnick, president of the Humane Society of Missouri. “We are proud and grateful we are able to provide the lengthy and extensive professional care they will need before we find them the forever homes they truly deserve.”

The dogs will be taken to Humane Society of Missouri headquarters in St. Louis, Mo. where they will be examined by Humane Society of Missouri veterinarians and immediately begin receiving treatment to relieve their suffering from the extreme itching.

Because the treatment for this skin condition can take several months, these dogs will not be immediately available for adoption.Treatment also includes frequent bedding changes. Donations of bed sheets, blankets, towels and dog beds are urgently needed to help care for these rescued dogs and may be brought to the Humane Society of Missouri’s Macklind Ave. Adoption Center, 1201 Macklind Ave., St. Louis, Mo. 63110. Monetary donations to provide for their care may be made at or by calling 314-951-1542.
