With the coming of spring comes telephone and email scammers trying to scare you and then stealing your money.

Specifically, according the Kari Goodman of the Hannibal Board of Public Works, scammers pretending to be from BPW and demanding you pay your utility bill.

Goodman advises that BPW does not make calls demanding immediate payment, and will not make calls after hours or on weekends.

Other things to remember are to never give out your personal information over the phone, never wire money to someone you don’t know and make sure you are dealing with the Hannibal Board of Public Works before you pay any amount.

If you believe a fake utility collector or any other scammer has contacted you, you should contact BPW, Hannibal Police or the Missouri Attorney General Consumer Protection Division.
