Flu Outbreak Worst Since 2009
The flu season of 2013-14 is the worst since the pandemic of 2009. That was the word from Carrie Fogel, R.N. of the Ralls County Health Department.
She told us that this season's outbreak of the H1N1 flu strain is the worst in five years, when the 2009 pandemic swept the country.
Fogel said that, in most years, the people most in jeopardy from the flu are the very young and the elderly. What seems to be making this season unique is the fact that more of the middle aged are being adversely affected by this strain.
Something else unique this year -- usually, flu shots are recommended for the young, the old and those who take care of them. This year, Fogel says that anyone over six months of age should get a flu shot.
She said it's not too late to get a flu shot. Supplies of vaccine are plentiful, and the Ralls County Health Department has flu shots available.
