Palmyra firefighters battling a destructive blaze at 110 West Ross Street this morning called in mutual aid from Hannibal.

Captain Mark Van Winkle was one of four Hannibal firefighters who responded with Ladder #3.  He said the call came in shortly before 7 a.m. Van Winkle says the Wil-Do Deals store was fully engulfed in flames upon arrival. His Hannibal crew set up on the side of the building and sprayed  water. They returned to Hannibal around 10:30 a.m. once the blaze was under control.

The building was totally destroyed. Only the outside walls  were still standing when the Hannibal crew left the scene. Van Winkle says the roof had caved in and a backhoe was brought in to start pulling it apart to keep the fire knocked down.

Captain Van Winkle was not aware of any injuries while his crew was on the scene.  The cause  remains under investigation.
