A class action lawsuit has been filed against the city of Hannibal, the Hannibal Board of Public Works and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources over water quality violations.

The suit was filed Tuesday in Marion County Circuit Court by a St. Louis attorney on behalf of Vickie Brooks, Oliver Latta, Crystal Stephens and Christine Stolte.

The suit seeks punitive and compensatory damages for BPW water customers between 2011 and 2016.

According to the suit, there were elevated levels in the city’s water supply of total trihalomethanes, a disinfection byproduct that may increase the risk of developing cancer or liver, kidney and nervous system problems.

BPW had dealt with previous issues with its water supply by using chloramine as a disinfectant, which has also drawn criticism from water customers.
