The police chief of a small northeast Missouri town has died at home.

Louisiana Mayor Bart Niedner says on a Facebook post that 44-year-old Rich Hughes was found dead at his home Wednesday.

Niedner says no foul play is suspected. An investigation into the cause of death is underway.

The Quincy Herald-Whig reports the city's emergency calls are being transferred to the Pike County Sheriff's Department and sheriff's deputies will help patrol the town while the police force and community grieve.

Detective April Epperson was appointed interim police chief.
