Champaign County authorities have charged a maintenance man for an Urbana apartment complex with sexually assaulting a girl who often visited the building.

The (Champaign) News-Gazette reports 65-year-old Norman Simpson was charged Thursday with three counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and one count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse. Authorities say he assaulted the girl who is now 11 years old when she was between the ages of 6 and 10. He was ordered held on $750,000 bond.

Assistant State's Attorney Tim Sullivan says the girl was hearing a presentation at school Monday on body safety when a social worker noticed her crying. School officials notified authorities after the girl said she had been touched inappropriately by Simpson, who was a family member's friend.

Online jail records didn't indicate an attorney.
