A St. Louis man whose attempts to elude pursuing police included wading into the Mississippi River is jailed on $750,000 bond after being charged with multiple felonies in Illinois.

Prosecutors in southwestern Illinois' Madison County charged 20-year-old Daytrail Brown on Thursday with five counts of burglary, as well as counts of fleeing police and possession of a stolen vehicle.

Authorities say police who on Wednesday spotted Brown near Granite City, Illinois, driving a vehicle matching the description of one sought in connection with various burglaries gave chase after the vehicle sped away.

Investigators say Brown later jumped out of the vehicle and ran in to the river to try to avoid police, but he eventually swam back and was arrested.

Online court records don't show whether Brown has an attorney.
