Police say a 38-year-old suburban St. Louis man who jumped out of an ambulance died after scuffling with officers.

O'Fallon, Missouri, police say Robert Kenkel of O'Fallon died Sunday not long after police say he kicked at officers and lost consciousness.

Authorities say officers responding to a report that a man was standing in a street were told by the man's mother her son was acting paranoid.

Police say Kenkel was hallucinating and speaking incoherently. But he agreed to go to a hospital for an evaluation and voluntarily got into the ambulance, only to jump out a short time later. Officers then found him, and he initially complied with orders before thrashing as they handcuffed him.

Police say Kenkel then became unresponsive and was later declared dead at a hospital.
