Discarding a cigarette butt out the car window can result in serious consequences due to the dangerously dry conditions in the area.

Officials from the Missouri Highway Patrol say the embers from a cigarette can ignite even the smallest amount of dry grass and start a dangerous fire. Just discarding a cigarette butt along the road is considered littering, punishable by a fine up to $1,000 or a year in jail, but more serious criminal charges may await those who start a fire with their carelessness.
