Bills aimed at spurring growth in Missouri's dairy and agriculture industries have been signed into law by Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon.

Nixon signed the legislation Friday during a visit to a Barry County dairy farm.

The dairy bill will create a scholarship of $5,000 for students pursuing degrees in agriculture who agree to join the industry in Missouri after graduating.

The bill also creates a subsidy for federal dairy insurance for farmers, while the agriculture bill will allow trucks to haul heavier loads of livestock and grain during harvest season.

The bills are set to take effect Aug. 28.
